Queer Fams-giving: Reclaim the Holidays

Registration form: http://whpsych.2.vu/famsgiving2022

We hope you'll join us at the 2nd annual Queer Fams-giving: Reclaim the Holidays | This FREE event is for Queer, Trans, Nonbinary, Two Spirit, LGBQIA+, and other folks who are part of this sweet, sweet rainbow!

(Allies, thanks for respecting that this event is ONLY for 2SLGBTQIA+ community members.)

Event Details:

  • Via Zoom (NOT recorded, captions available)

  • When: Day of Mourning* (so-called-Thanksgiving day)

  • Time: Multiple sessions between 10:30AM-3PM EST | 7:30AM-12PM PST

  • Bring your comfiest cozy clothes, your sensory soothing gadgets, some headphones in a private space to respect the privacy of those who attend, and your queer-as-heck authentic full self!

We decided to come together as 2SLGBTQIA+ folks on a day that is difficult for many people, for many reasons. We completely disavow the commemoration of settler colonialism that mainstream narratives of Thanksgiving celebrate. We recognize the need for community and care on this day, and our hope that this gathering can be a day of healing, reflection, and nourishment for all of our communities and for the ongoing work of decolonization, water protection, ending violence, and land back movements. *For more information on the history of the colonization of Turtle Island (also currently referred to as North America), this podcast offers an overview.

Tentative schedule:

Schedule is being finalized and topics for each session will be sent out including zoom links closer to the event! Each session will end 5-15 minutes early to allow for break and transition to next session. Offerings and facilitation by addyson tucker, Caitlyn Dunham, Moriah Williams, Gray Baldwin, & Bailey Smith. We will follow-up post-event with links to any resources that are shared.

*NOTE* Given the tragic violence against our community in Colorado this past weekend, we recognize that being in community might feel incredibly important for many of us this week and at the same time, overwhelming. Though this is not an explicit space for group process, facilitators may hold space at the beginning of each session for a moment of reflection, collective honoring of the lives lost, and reminding us all to check in with our mind/body about what we might need in that moment to nurture ourselves.

- Session 1 starting at 10:30AM EST | 7:30AM PST

  • Facilitators: addyson tucker (they/them) & Caitlyn Dunham (they/them)

  • Topic: Self-Compassion & Radical Affirmation for Grounding and Connection

- Session 2 starting at 12PM EST | 9AM PST

- Session 3 starting at 1:30PM EST | 10:30AM PST

  • Facilitators: Gray Baldwin (they/them) & Bailey Smith (she/her/ella - a strong ally)

  • Topic: Gratitude, Acceptance, and Mindfulness through the Arts
