Proposed Changes to Title IX Regulations; Belmont’s LBGTQ+ Alliance’s response
OUR RESPONSE:
We strongly support and recommend passage of the U.S. Department of Education’s proposed changes to Title IX, which protect students from discrimination based on gender identity and sexual orientation. Title IX was originally signed into law 50 years ago to secure an education free from sexual discrimination for women and girls. The proposed changes will result in better protections for all LGBTQ+ students, teachers and staff as well as families in our community and educational organizations across the country. Research demonstrates that discrimination, victimization and violence towards LGBTQ+ individuals contribute to a significant increase in the risk of suicidality and mental health issues in these individuals. Our community is not immune to incidents of harassment and discrimination, and our organization strives to promote awareness, inclusion, equity, and an environment free of harassment or discrimination of all people, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.
The proposed changes to Title IX will greatly serve to strengthen this resolve, prohibiting discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identify, protecting the rights of parents and guardians in supporting their students, providing clarity on scope and obligation of the schools, and expanding protections to all educational activities and athletics. Moreover, the changes will help us promote and cultivate educational environments and communities in which all LGBTQ+ individuals can thrive.
